Pet Owners: How to Keep Your Carpets Clean

Pets lying on carpetOne of the best things we can do as people is own and care for pets. Pets are great. They keep you company and cuddle with you. They can help reduce levels of depression and anxiety. But, like humans, pets make mistakes and have accidents, many of them resulting in nasty carpet stains. Carpet can really make or break a room, so when pet stains are keeping your carpets from looking their best, what can you do? These stain removal and pet training tips can help your carpets stay clean and look their best!

1. Potty Training

It’s common knowledge that pets need to be potty trained, whether you’re teaching your dog to only go outside or your cat to use the litter box. Luckily for us, pets are quite smart and can pick up on stuff like this easily. Still, accidents can happen. A few things you can do to prevent your pets from going on the floor include:

  • Cleaning your cat’s litter box regularly. Cats are adamantly against using a dirty litter box and will opt for the carpet instead of their box is dirty. Keeping their litter box clean minimizes this risk.
  • Investing in a dog door. Dog doors are great because they let your pet go outside freely, so if they have to go and you’re not home, you don’t have to worry.
  • Training your dogs to use pads. If you live in an apartment and can’t have a dog door installed, pads are a good backup. Your dog can learn to go on a pad that is placed preferably on tile rather than the carpet.

2. Stain Removal

Even the most trained pet can have bad days. If your lovable cat or dog does go on the carpet, there are a few stain removal techniques you can use to ensure the remaining stain isn’t permanent. If your pet urinates on the carpet, use a thick stack of paper towels with newspaper lining the top to soak up as much as you can and then rinse with water and blot dry. If the stain has already set or dried, you can use a carpet stain remover and pet deodorizer to eliminate stains and smells.

3. Professional Cleaning

While some smaller stains can be removed or prevented easily at home, many of them require professional cleaning, especially if the stain has already settled deep within your carpet.
